DAWSON recently served as a gold sponsor of the 2019 Native Hawaiian Organizations Association (NHOA) Business Summit held in Honolulu at the Prince Waikiki Hotel from May 21-23. Founded in 2007, NHOA is a trade association of Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs) that supports the community of NHOs, as defined by the Small Business Administration, and their for-profit 8(a) subsidiaries.

The Hawaiian Native Corporation (HNC), DAWSON’s parent company, is a member of NHOA, and HNC leadership has been instrumental in shaping the growth and strategy of NHOA from the very beginning. Our company founder, Chris Dawson, was the founding President of NHOA, a legacy that continues today with DAWSON Chief Advocate, Lani Dawson Arena, serving as current NHOA President.

NHOA’s mission is “to protect, promote, and advance the preservation of federal contracting for Native Hawaiian Organizations (NHOs)”, a mission rooted in the legislative intent of the Native 8(a) program, which seeks to provide economic opportunities for Native communities. NHOA’s work is critical because it supports the long-term success of the NHO program, which in turn enables NHOs to have an impact on the Native Hawaiian community through their giveback initiatives.

The business summit, now in its 5th year, is one of the ways that NHOA brings various stakeholders together from Hawaii and the U.S. to provide opportunities for its members. The conference focused on legislative, legal, and business issues relevant to small businesses in the federal contracting industry, and included networking opportunities and matchmaking through Govmates. Several DAWSON employees also served as conference panelists and volunteers.

Overall, it was a great opportunity for DAWSON representatives to learn about the latest developments in our industry, share knowledge, engage with members of the small business community, and continue building vital relationships.
